Sharing What We Know

Climate Conscious Shipping and Fulfillment

Are you determined to make your supply chain greener but don't know where to start? In our latest eBook, we break down sustainability strategies you can implement today so you can have a measurable impact across your business.

Created: Sep 21, 2021

Sustainability and corporate responsibility are part of our core values, so we made landmark progress by becoming carbon neutral in 2021 and pledging to offset all our historical and future emissions across our global supply chain. Along with sustainable strategies implemented throughout our supply chain such as order orchestration, pallet optimization, and direct injection shipping, we decided that becoming carbon neutral was the best way for us to have a meaningful impact.

No one company can solve truly global challenges, but we’re hopeful that our supply chain can be part of a far-reaching shift in habits.

We have partnered with South Pole, a leading project developer and provider of global climate action solutions, to deliver measurable benefits that are helping brands achieve their sustainability goals.

Through our partnership with South Pole, we have measured and set a plan to reduce emissions from all our historical, current and projected shipping and operational emissions. To compensate for these emissions, we have purchased carbon offsets which support climate protection projects around the world.

By making this change, we can promise that all packages shipped through Borderless360 are sent completely carbon neutral. This means you can highlight on your own website and marketplaces that your packages are shipped through a carbon neutral provider.

In 2021, Borderless360 was certified as a Climate Neutral Company by South Pole for efforts to measure, reduce and compensate for our emissions.

The South Pole Climate Neutrality labels are closely aligned with international standards such as PAS 2060 – the leading international standard for demonstrating carbon neutrality, developed in 2014 by the British Standards Institution (BSI). The underlying greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting must follow recognised international standards such as the GHG Protocol or ISO 14064-1.

All orders passing through our system are accounted for and offset through our partnership with South Pole. Borderless360 purchases verified emissions reductions, popularly known as "offsets", at no extra cost to our customers. These offsets finance renewable energy projects or carbon sequestration projects globally.

This initiative comes at no additional cost to buyers or sellers. It simply comes with the satisfaction of knowing that shipping with Borderless360 means making a positive impact on the planet.

Although sustainability measures have been implemented throughout the Borderless360 supply chain, certain carbon emissions are unavoidable. But that doesn't mean they can't be addressed. Borderless360 takes responsibility for these emissions through purchasing carbon credits, which are used to fund carbon offsetting projects.

globe

When Borderless360 buys carbon credits or offsets, we are simply making a financial contribution that will be invested in carbon reduction projects. These projects do this by removing existing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or by preventing new emissions from happening.

There are two main types of carbon offset projects: forestry projects and energy projects.

Forestry projects conserve and restore ecosystems which play a vital role in carbon sequestration. For example, a project may engage farmers in sustainable harvesting and forest management to protect trees.

Energy projects on the other hand focus on renewables to increase access to clean energy and reduce fossil fuel use. For example, one project may build a wind farm that produces electricity, while another project might fund an existing hydropower plant to support sustainable development by creating stable well-paid jobs while offsetting the grid with clean energy.

Carbon Credits

Carbon credits represent the financial contribution that will be invested in carbon reduction projects. The purpose of all carbon or renewable credits and offset schemes is to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.

Real projects. Real impacts.

E-commerce sales are sky-rocketing, which means the sector’s emissions are soaring too. Different studies will tell you different figures, but no matter what the measure of impact is, the important thing is we know it is significant, and that we have to act, now.

We can make a short-term impact with offsets, be more efficient with the tools we have, and in the future use emissions-free transport methods where possible.

climate action

Each offset project Borderless360 chooses is carefully selected, giving you confidence that our climate action will deliver proven impacts aligned with the aims of the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

The UN SDGs, otherwise known as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

The Borderless360 accredited carbon calculator is designed to help our clients better understand a package’s emission impact via multiple modes of transport across the globe.

Borderless360 customers can request access to the calculator to estimate each shipment's carbon emissions. Rest assured, we will offset them for you each time you process an order through our system.

As part of our sustainability roadmap, we plan to make the calculator available to all customers and deliver automated calculations for each shipment.

co2

A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide and methane) that are generated by our actions. Here at Borderless360, we have designed a calculator using Carbon Interface methodology that will determine the amount of CO2 your shipment generates.

c02

These examples of the calculator in action show that sending a 3 kg package by plane from Sydney to Melbourne (695 km) will produce 1 kg of of carbon emissions. Meanwhile, sending 1,000 kg of stock by sea from Hong Kong to Rotterdam, the Netherlands will generate 165 kg of carbon emissions on a journey of 20628 km.

In order to provide accurate estimates, each estimate type has a different carbon calculation that factors in best practices from GHG Protocol, the IPCC and country-specific agencies such as the EPA.

In order to stay fit for the future, Borderless360 wants to advocate an environmentally compatible supply chain for our customers.

By being transparent about our progress, eager in our pursuits and collaborative in our approach, we will continue to keep our sustainability promise, creating a legacy of change.

Our climate goals are challenging but we believe the path to sustainability is as urgent as it is important. Together, we hope to set an example and standard for the logistics sector at large.
